Osteopenia

Osteopenia

What is osteopenia?

If the osteoporotic bone loss falls below a certain threshold, we speak of osteopenia. If the bone mass drops even further and falls below a lower second limit value, we call this osteoporosis.

Osteopenia describes a kind of “intermediate state”, so to speak, with a moderately reduced bone mass, which is no longer considered normal, but has not yet fallen so far that the criteria of osteoporosis are already met. However, osteopenia also increases the risk of bone fractures.
